First Lady Jenny Sullivan Sanford is the First Lady of South Carolina.[1] She was born and raised in Winnetka, Illinois and has a bachelor's degree in finance from Georgetown University. With an older brother, two younger sisters and a younger brother. After college, she worked for the investment banking firm Lazard Freres & Co in New York from 1984 through 1990, including serving as vice president in mergers and acquisitions.[2]

She is the wife of Gov. Mark Sanford and is currently serving her second term as First Lady. She previously worked on Wall Street and managed her husband's campaigns. Born in 1962, she was raised in Winnetka, Illinois with an older brother, two younger sisters and a younger brother. Mrs. Sanford is the granddaughter of Bolton Sullivan, the founder of the Skil Corporation of Chicago. On June 24, 2009, her husband admitted to having an extramarital affair with a woman in Argentina.[1]

The Sanfords then moved from New York to the Charleston area where Mrs. Sanford balanced raising a family, managing her husband Mark's political campaigns and being active in the non-profit community. In 1994, Mrs. Sanford managed her husband Mark's successful campaign for Congress, the couple's first foray into the political arena. Mrs. Sanford also managed his winning gubernatorial campaign in 2002, assisted him daily at the Statehouse during his first term as governor, and co-managed his successful reelection in 2006.

At the Governor's Mansion, Mrs. Sanford has completely reorganized operations, resulting in significant savings to the taxpayers. With the help of the Mansion Commission and Foundation, Mrs. Sanford also oversaw the Lace House interior refurbishment project in 2003 and the home has now been successfully reopened for rental and public use –generating nearly $250, 000 in funds to support the historical properties on the Mansion Complex grounds.

Mrs. Sanford is passionate about the role that good nutrition and regular physical activity play in helping to prevent cancer and other chronic diseases. In 2005, the First Lady launched the Healthy SC Challenge – a results –based initiative designed to help South Carolinians quit smoking, eat healthier and start exercising.

Mrs. Sanford currently serves on the Hollings Cancer Center Advisory Committee at MUSC. She has served as a board member on other non-profit organizations including the Site Advisory Council for Drayton Hall historical property in Charleston, the Coastal Community Foundation and the MUSC Children's Hospital Advisory Fund.

During her husband's second term as governor, Mrs. Sanford is enjoying spending more time in her most important role as mother of their four sons – Marshall, Landon, Bolton and Blake.[1]

Marshall Clement "Mark" Sanford, Jr. (born May 28, 1960) is an American politician from South Carolina. From 1994 to 2000, he served as the Republican representative in the United States House of Representatives for South Carolina's 1st congressional district, where he was a staunch conservative with an independent streak. In 2002, he was elected the 115th Governor of South Carolina, where he had a contentious relationship with the South Carolina legislature.

Sanford was reelected Governor in 2006, where he campaigned against pork barrel spending. In office, notably, he rejected stimulus funds for his state from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 but later took it so that it would not be distributed to other states. Sanford's governorship has been put into doubt by extended disappearances he recently revealed to be part of an extramarital affair with an Argentine. Until June 24, 2009, he was the chairman of the Republican Governors Association.[3]

Early Life

Before his senior year of high school, Sanford moved with his family to a 3, 000-acre (12 km2) Coosaw Plantation near Beaufort, South Carolina from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where he grew up. Sanford attained the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.[1] He received a B.A. in Business from Furman University in 1983 and an MBA from Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia in 1988.[2] After graduating from Furman University his first job was as an Associate for Coldwell Banker in 1983. He then worked as Project Manager for Beachside Real Estate at the Isle of Palms, with Pat McKinney and Frank Brumley between 1984–1986. In 1987 while working towards his MBA he was trained at Goldman Sachs. After graduating with his MBA he took a position as a Financial Analyst with Chemical Realty Corporation (1988–1990). At the end of 1990 he moved back to Charleston, South Carolina and worked as a Real Estate Broker on Daniel Island for Brumley Company (1990–1991). Sanford founded Norton and Sanford Real Estate Investment, a leasing and brokerage company, in 1992. He still owns the company.[3] In the early 1990s he moved to Sullivan's Island, South Carolina with his wife Jenny and their four boys, Marshall, Landon, Bolton, and Blake.[3]
